What is an image file size?
Images are made up of tiny dots called pixels, and each pixel carries color information. This color is created by combining three basic colors: red, green, and blue (RGB). To store the color of a single pixel, 3 bytes (which equals 24 bits) are typically used — one byte for each color component. Now, consider a high-resolution image. If a photo contains 10 million pixels (often referred to as 10 megapixels), it requires 30 million bytes to store, because each pixel uses 3 bytes. That’s equal to about 30 megabytes (MB) of data — quite a large file! So, when you take a 10-megapixel photo with your camera or smartphone, the image size is around 30 MB. If you want to send that photo via email, your device needs to upload 30 MB of data, and your friend will need to download 30 MB, which can take time and use up a lot of storage space.
